UNDP China Internship Programme Location: Beijing, China Deadline: February 2007 (soft deadline) Interns specialize in the areas of democratic governance, sustainable environmental policies, poverty reduction, and other activities related to sustainable human development. Under the program, interns will work in UNDP Office and/or UNDP project office assisting in e.g. program management, organization of workshop/seminar and preparation of briefing and information materials paper on development subjects. Qualified females are particularly encouraged to apply. Website: http://www.undp.org.cn/ Center for National Security Studies - Summer Law Clerk Location: Washington, D.C. Deadline: February 2007 (soft deadline) Must be a law student or recent graduate with a demonstrated record of commitment to the public interest, excellent writing and research skills, and a particular interest in issues such as wiretapping, detention, immigration and related issues affecting civil liberties in the name of national security. An hourly stipend is available to supplement any public interest grants or funding from law schools. Website: http://www.cnss.org/ Royal Thai Embassy - Summer Internship Location: Washington, D.C. Deadline: February 2007 (soft deadline) Interns conduct research on political, legal, economic, social issues. Past research topics include: US-Thailand trade; intellectual property rights and the Free Trade Agreement; and US-based companies and their operations in Thailand. Interns may also have the opportunity to attend Capitol Hill functions, seminars, public hearings and briefings. Deadline: February 15, 2007 Interns assist with researching the implementation of laws and new regulations issued by the various U.S. departments; finding references in the U.S. Code and the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations; obtaining and filing documents regarding US antidumping and countervailing duty investigations — including documents needed in WTO investigations and only available from the US Department of Commerce or the US Trade Representative's Office; updating the list of US steel investigations; preparing reports on textile, joint ventures and antitrust notices; preparing monthly trade data for the EU-25 Member States; and updating the lists of US Government staff changes. It may also be necessary to assist other sections of the Delegation by attending congressional hearings and reporting on these. A working knowledge of French is useful, but not essential. Website: http://www.eurunion.org/delegati/ppd/interns.htm ICTJ Liberia Rule of Law Program Internship Location: Monrovia, Liberia Deadline: February 23, 2007 The intern will be involved in substantive work related to the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process, security sector reform (SSR) and other transitional justice issues in Liberia. A portion of their time will also be required in performing operational tasks and providing administrative support. Deadline: February 28, 2007 The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity for involvement in governmental affairs, and to provide a general understanding of the Canada-U.S. bilateral relationship through the dynamics at work in the Embassy. There are frequently positions available in trade, environment, energy, and congressional relations. All interns are retained on a non-remunerative basis and usually work 4 1/2 days per week. You should be fluent in English and one other UNICEF working language i.e. French or Spanish. Website: http://www.unicef.org/about/employ/index_internship.html International Center for Transitional Justice Internship Location: New York or Brussels Deadline: March 5, 2007 The ICTJ is a human rights organization that provides assistance and information to countries in transition struggling to confront a period of past abuse. Depending on the context, the Center may assist with initiatives to prosecute perpetrators, establish the truth about past crimes, provide reparations to victims, or implement reforms to prevent further abuses in the future. The Center provides direct, in-country technical assistance, undertakes in-depth research projects, offers capacity building and training for local actors, and provides information and policy input to international policymakers. ICTJ interns are generally involved in substantive work, including research, monitoring country developments, and otherwise assisting program staff. Deadline: May 1, 2007 IPS is the nation's oldest and largest multi-issue think tank promoting progressive thought. As an intern, you will have an opportunity to conduct research in a wide range of foreign and domestic policy issues. The New Internationalism Project includes three major areas of work: the Middle East, U.S.-UN relations, and U.S. interventionism. IPS also is particularly interested in those who have an existing background in areas such as environment (particularly climate change) issues, environmental justice, alternative energy, environmental economics, human rights, and gender studies. Website: http://www.ips-dc.org/projects/internship.htm Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in South-East Asia Location: Regional Office for South-East Asia Deadline: Ongoing, 1.5 months before start date Interns will have opportunities to broaden their human rights experience and knowledge; exposure to the work of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in South-East Asia and human rights related work in other UN agencies; broaden the understanding of current human rights issues in South-East Asia and globally; and introduce to the functioning of United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms. These internships are intended to promote a better understanding of international problems and to provide an inside view into the work of ECLAC while at the same time supplying the various divisions with the assistance of outstanding young students specializing in a field related to their own work.
