ASIL’s Annual Meeting historically attracts legal scholars, government officials, and practitioners from countries worldwide. ASIL is a membership-based nonprofit headquartered in Washington, D.C. Membership is not limited to US citizens or professionals residing in the US. Approximately 40% of their 4,000+ members reside outside the United States. The Annual Meeting coincides with the White & Case International Rounds of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, March 21-27 2010 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C.

New Location

In keeping with this year’s theme of “International Law in a Time of Change,” ASIL has a new location this year, the Ritz-Carlton. There is free wireless Internet access in the lobby; you do not need to be a guest to use it. All public areas of the hotel are nonsmoking. Parking is available onsite for $25 per day. The hotel is within walking distance of Metro, the mass-transit system in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The closest Metro station is Foggy Bottom. Upon exiting the escalator to the street, turn left, cross the street into Washington Circle and walk to the far side, take New Hampshire Avenue 1 block, and the hotel will be on the left side. It also is a reasonable walk from the Dupont Circle and Farragut North stations.

ASIL Online

ASIL is partnering with fora.tv to offer live webcasts of selected sessions for a flat-fee subscription of $99.95. The webcasts may be viewed on-demand for up to 60 days. ASIL is also now on twitter @asilorg. Last year, I was one of the few — and perhaps the only — attendee tweeting from the Annual Meeting @insidejustice #ASIL

Keynote Lectures

The two keynote lectures will be delivered by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin of the Supreme Court of Canada and Harold Hongju Koh, the Legal Adviser to the U.S. Department of State.

The Grotius Lecture: “Should International Law Lead or Follow in Changing Times?” will be given by University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law Professor Antony Anghie with discussant Anne Marie Slaughter of the U.S. Department of State.
